01 The Plane in Peril
A floatplane with four people aboard reports a hard ocean landing, flipping over in an area of turbulent rip tides. Coastal Nations Coast Guard Auxiliary joins the rescue mission, as their Quatsino Nation prepares to return to their ancient seaside home.
02 Sea Hawk Down
Amid training exercises, two Quatsino Coastal Nations Coast Guard Auxiliary vessels react to a frantic ‘Mayday’ from people trapped on a small boat with its engine on fire. The environmental threat conjures up vivid memories of previous industrial pollution.
03 The Missing Mushroom Picker
As the Coastal Nations Coast Guard Auxiliary races against time, changing tides and threatening weather to locate a missing mushroom picker, their efforts recall the tale of Bak’was, Quatsino’s legendary Wild Man of the Woods.
04 Clam Digger Calamity
To rescue a community clam digger, Quatsino Coastal Nations Coast Guard Auxiliary head into an area of dangerous underwater rocks and littered with logging debris – recalling an earlier era when their shellfish harvest was decimated by industrial polluters.
05 Paddle After Dark
With the help of a SAR member from Kyuquot, Quatsino’s Coastal Nations Coast Guard Auxiliary searches dark waters and hidden coves for signs of a lost paddleboarder, fulfilling a peaceful history of intertribal cooperation long celebrated in song and dance.
06 Fires from the Earth the Tseax Cone
Struggling against a heavy tide, Nisga’a’s Coast Guard Auxiliary pulls close to a four-person civilian boat with one injured passenger. The area the two vessels are in was once the scene of Canada’s deadliest volcanic event, the eruption of the Tseax Cone.
07 The Stranded and the Stolen
While members of the Nisga’a community join forces to recue those lost at sea, efforts on land focus on reclaiming pieces of their heritage that, in an earlier era, had also been lost – or misappropriated by foreigners unaware of their cultural significance.
08 Hunters and the Hunted
To confront possible unlicensed hunters in Nisga’a territory, Coast Guard Auxiliary calls for a Compliance and Enforcement officer. Ensuring regulations apply to visitors and locals helps preserve the Nation’s abundant fish, wildlife and timber resources.
09 The Sea Doo Search
Local knowledge of wind and tides plays a big part in the success of Gitxaala Coastal Nations Coast Guard Auxiliary. Unruly tides and rugged shorelines challenging seagoing tourists also harbour the community’s vital food sources of seaweed and marine life.
10 Crisis Aboard the Runaway Boat
While the Kitkatla SAR unit uses their training and skills to board an out-of-control tour boat with an incapacitated captain, children in the community learn to hone their artistic skills within the historical framework of their culture and native language.
11 The Burn on the Beach
As the SAR team speeds toward a group of campers in distress, Gitxaala elders share the cultural heritage of this 5000-year-old community, while encouraging their young people to experience and learn from the people and ways of the world beyond their borders.
12 Lost at Sea
A second Coast Guard Auxiliary unit joins the search for a solo boater lost in the Gitxaala Nation’s labyrinth of islands. Meanwhile, community members both young and old scour rocky shorelines for the traditional natural foods making up 80-90% of their diet.
13 A Diver in Danger
As Gitxaala Nation’s Ocean Warriors search for a diver who has failed to return to his boat, the Kitkatla community celebrates the repatriation of cultural artifacts. These sacred treasures bring new hope and fresh insight into the ways of their ancestors.
